A Biblical Framework for Financial Stewardship

The 7-Bucket Money Allocation Plan

A Biblical Approach to Financial Stewardship, Financial Readiness, and Building a Lasting Legacy

Money is more than something we earn, spend, or save. It is a resource entrusted to us, and how we manage it reflects our priorities, responsibilities, and preparation for the future.

Over the years, I have developed and taught a simple framework I call The 7-Bucket Money Allocation Plan. The purpose is to help individuals and families develop intentional habits for allocating income, honoring God, preparing for emergencies, building assets, meeting obligations, and enjoying life without losing sight of the future.

Each bucket serves a distinct purpose. Together, they provide a practical way to think about financial stewardship.

The Seven Buckets

Each Bucket Has a Purpose

01

Tithe — Give First

Honor God with the first portion of your increase. Giving reflects gratitude, obedience, and recognition that everything we possess ultimately belongs to Him.

02

Save — Pay Yourself Second

Set aside a portion of income before discretionary spending. First, establish and maintain an accessible emergency fund. Once adequate reserves are established, consider additional long-term savings strategies, including properly structured whole life insurance when suitable for your needs, costs, and financial circumstances.

03

Invest — Build Wealth and Opportunity

Allocate resources to a dedicated investment account for long-term growth and opportunity. Depending on your goals and circumstances, opportunities may include stocks, real estate, commercial property, or business ownership. Investments involve varying degrees of risk.

04

Mortgage — Build Equity and Reduce Future Living Costs

Prioritize responsible homeownership and a manageable mortgage. Work toward building equity and reducing housing debt so future retirement income is less burdened by housing payments.

05

Recreation & Vacation — Enjoy Life Intentionally

Financial stewardship is not simply about accumulation. Set aside funds for recreation, vacations, family memories, and meaningful experiences without relying unnecessarily on consumer debt.

06

Life Needs — Fund the Household

Plan for the essential responsibilities of daily life, including food, utilities, transportation, healthcare, insurance, and other necessary household expenses.

07

Clothing & Personal Allowance — Plan for Individual Needs

Provide a reasonable allowance for clothing, personal care, individual purchases, and other personal expenses. A thoughtful allocation helps manage everyday spending without constantly disrupting other priorities.

The Framework

Why This Plan Matters

The 7-Bucket Money Allocation Plan is not a rigid formula requiring every household to assign the same percentages.

It is a framework for developing habits and making deliberate decisions about where income goes.

Every family is different. Income, debt, dependents, financial responsibilities, emergency reserves, and stages of life all influence the appropriate allocation. The goal is to give every dollar a purpose while maintaining the flexibility to adjust as circumstances change.

Biblical Foundation

Stewardship Rooted in Scripture

"The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want."

Proverbs 21:5 (KJV)

Biblical stewardship includes diligence, preparation, responsibility, generosity, and care for others. The 7-Bucket framework is designed to help families put these principles into practice — not as a legalistic system, but as a tool for intentional, faithful living.
